Higher nigral iron has been associated with levodopa-induced dyskinesia; if levodopa itself raises nigral iron, this could help explain the mechanistic link between long-term levodopa exposure and dyskinesia development.
Prior imaging work found QSM values (an MRI measure of iron) in the substantia nigra were significantly higher in PD patients with dyskinesia than those without (p=0.03), and QSM was an independent predictor of dyskinesia development.
